“TURN A PRISON INTO A COLLEGE”
EDUCATION FOR HOLOT DETAINEES
Between 2014-2018, The Schoolhouse brought education to the detainees in Holot Detention Facility in the Negev. The detention facility was situated in the middle of the desert, an hour from the nearest big city. The residents were not allowed to work and had little or no alternative program in their day. This situation and lack of activity brought despair, anxiety and sometimes depression.
With the support of UNHCR and other partners, The Schoohouse delivered English courses, computer courses, teaching empowerment and leadership training, catering to 20-25 individuals at a time. Most of this programming took place in nearby Nitzana Youth Village and sometimes outside of the facility. This educational program provided a safe, structured and productive framework, while reinstalling the ability of the detainees to dare and dream of a better future.
Holot detention facility was closed in March 2018.
